PRESBITERO MAESTRO  CEMETARY
AT NIGHT
CITY TOUR LUNA LLENA

This is where the "Crypt of the Heroes" is found, a beautiful historical Sanctuary which guards the mortal remains of the heroes of the Pacific War, among them Miguel Grau and Francesco Bolognesi. The remains of those who fell in the battles of Tacna and Arica, San Juan de Miraflores and Huamachuco, to name but a few, can also be found here. Its name was given in memory of the architect who built it, Presbitero Matias, who died when building the facade, and was consequently the first to be buried here. Its symmetrical style is clearly neoclassical. It is one of the most crowded houses in Lima because of its history.

An interesting night excursion in Lima City to admire First Monumental Cemetery in Latin America, Presbitero Maestro, which has an antiquity of 200 years. In this place we can find human remains of important people (presidents, writers, artists, heroes of the Independence Days and Pacific Ocean War as well as Heroes Crypt where we can see the evolution of the funeral art in Peru since 1800’s. There will be lights, shadows and special stories of our history.

This was the first official cemetery in Lima and was inaugurated in 1808 by the Viceroy Abascal. The designer was the well-known master builder and priest Matías Maestro. There are more than 766 mausoleums in the neoclassic style and among them are fascinating statues and monuments inspired by Saints and theological virtues.

There are guided night visits of this cemetery on the last Thursday of every month (except December).
